Golden West Telecommunications has a newsletter Horizons for coop members. The May 2014 issue has the results of one of their poll in the March 2014 issue on what's good in South Dakota. Below is a copy of their list. It kind of fits in here.
**Best Hiking Trail: Harney Peak, **Best fishing spot: Lake Oahe, **Best Place for Pie: Al's Oasis, **Day-Trip destination: Sioux Falls, **Best Golf Course: Southern Hills Golf Course at Hot Springs, **Best stretch of SD Highway: Needles Highway, **Best Camping: Custer State Park, **Best State/National Park: Custer State Park, **Best Parade: Rapid City Parade of Lights and Deadwood Days of 76, **Best Rodeo:Deadwood Days of 76, **Best restaurant food: Custer Black Hills Burger and Bun.
That's the list generated by readers who responded to their quest or question. I'm not sure I agree with member's apparent consensus, but most likely nothing in there that would be terrible for anybody. But then, I probably wouldn't walk across a street to get to a rodeo, and frigid winter nights usually keep me away from Christmas light parades. My wife is a good cook, so we rarely ever eat in a resturant. Our best day trip destination would probably be Rapid City instead of Sioux Falls simply because it is easier to drive in Rapid City even if the signing there is dreadful. We have however been known to drive to Chamberlain just to eat pie and icecream at Al's Oasis in Oacoma.
Any readers here are welcome to put in their own suggestions here. I'd like to see comments on museums, small shops and interesting stores with at least some unique products. And then there is what you can see by walking all the way to your TV remote: What TV programs on SDPB-TV do you prefer?
There are many good things in South Dakota some much better than any other place and some only barely average in the rest of the US.
Have a little fun with this, but great boring seriousness is not a requirement on this one.
