*** Pollsters and Pundits miss it big(ly)

Last night was kind of a roller coaster.  I started off thinking Hillary Clinton was nearly a sure winner even if I was less that enthused about her as a candidate and was and am not at all certain a win by her would cause her election promises to disappear in a flash.  A Republican who did not support Trump was part of the PBS-TV discussion last night.  When the results started coming in showing that Republicans, men and women, were voting for Trump at usual GOP levels, he said that with all Trump's personal follies and egregious political positions, the GOP voters went tribal and voted for Trump simply because he had an (R) after his name.  See my post about "Lame, Blind, deaf, castrated yellow dog on life support below."

Pollsters and other pundit "experts", missed the Trump express from start to finish.  Months ago, I said Trump should not be underestimated.  His positions on building a wall against Mexico and deporting illegal aliens had and would get a lot of support.  I think pollsters did not get honest answers about this in a politically correct world and did not consider how it might over-ride many other issues and problems with Trump.

And there was just plain disgust with ineffective government.   But, how some voters could go after that GOP-caused problem by voting for  Republican Trump and Republican Senators and Representatives leaves me scratching my head.  This Trump and GOP support is a bit like trying to put out a fire by pouring on more gasoline.

And then there is the screwed up Hillary campaign.  I voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary and think he would have been a better candidate, but I voted for Hillary in the election. The campaign idea of appealing to aliens, browns, reds, blacks, et al did not gain her as much support as Obama had gotten in the previous election.  I think every time she gained a minority voter with her appeal, she lost a dozen white voters.  Talking about the wonders of diversity and more immigration cost her a lot of votes. And toss in gleeful commentary that Whites are only 72% of the US population and that mixture is political nitro-glycerin.   Telling men and women they should vote for her because she is a woman also may have gained her a few votes, but cost her dozens because women who worked for women did not view that as a legitimate reason to vote for a woman candidate and it also irritated a lot of males.  Hillary's preference for secrecy also caused her to dilly-dally on responding to charges which then kept dangling around her neck.  This was evidence of another problem, at least from my perspective, she does not seem to learn from mistakes or consequences of even innocent actions which blow up.  After all the harassment she and Bill got with White Water, etc. she surely should have realized that her actions regarding e-mail server of her own might cost her dearly.  She has also seemed to me to often have an initial position on many issues that is just plain wrong or wrong-headed which she only changes to a more rational position after getting her tits in a wringer.

Also, by now it should be obvious that relying on Harvard and Yale graduates and New Yorkers who have never been more than 2 blocks in any direction to run a national campaign from the center of New York City is not a good way to get a feeling for what is going on in those great spaces between the east and west coasts and the large coastal cities.  Ignoring the greater midwest cost her the election.

But, as wildly off has been all the blather about the campaigns and almost all the polls have missed the mark this election, my comments here may be just as completely wrong.

I hope Trump does not lead us into a deadly dead-end  abyss which leaves millions of us (even the loons who voted for Trump) without jobs, homes, and healthcare.

Of course, Thune and Daugaard have already been asked why they ever supported Trump.  Latest revelations on Trump's sexual bragging and demeaning of women do seem over the top.  Of course we must also remember that John Thune is running for re-election.  Not sure what Daugaard plans.

I am sure this will hit the Sabbath Gas Bags tomorrow morning.

A month or two or more, can't remember for sure, I wrote that it was more than passing strange that the rats were jumping onto a sinking ship. Now it is ironic that they are jumping off a sinking ship when it is too late to save themselves.

***John Mclaughlin RIP or hellish combat

Note of August 19, 2016-- PBS will have a special on John McLaughlin starting at 8PM CDT and 7PM MDT.

I have watched the Sabbath gasbags for many years.  John McLaughlin was rebroadcast on Sundays and originally on Friday evening at SDPB-TV.  The show was often both entertaining and informative.  Usually the only real new information came from the liberals he had on his panel.  I seldom agreed much with him, but tried not to miss his blasts anyway.  He will be missed despite his blustery character....and I do wonder what PBS will find to replace his show.   Maybe Charlie Rose can get off CBS with morning celebrity tripe and token "news" and stick to PBS nightly.  Actually, there must be a few others who could do a combative panel show better than he.   I guess we will soon see...maybe.

John McLaughlin, a former Roman Catholic priest who became an aide to Richard M. Nixon in the White House and parlayed his fierce defense of the president into a television career as host of “The McLaughlin Group,” the long-running Sunday morning program of combative political punditry, died on Tuesday at his home in Washington. ***Orlando, Trump, Hillary, Obama, radical Islam, etc.

By now, you have like me have probably watched dozens of news and opinion programs on Orlando terrorism, Trump, Hillary, Obama, and radical Islam as you want to see and also discovered that the more you see, the more you realize there isn't much new to hear.  The same video with flashing lights, the same overhead shot of the Plush or whatever and the same warmed over wordy nothings, again and again.

First, our government is pushing the "home-grown terrorist" meme, the self-radicalized meme, the sex confusion meme, and the last thing we want to say is Islamic terrorism meme, and following that is the terms won't change anything meme. so they can escape any blame for ignoring this terrorist until he had killed 50 people and wounded or maimed another 50 or so people.

Even "home-grown terrorists" have roots in terrorism or religious fanaticism.  Political correctness over-rides common sense when everything but real description of reality is  covered up with politically correct wishy washy double talk wordage. Part of Trump's appeal is his resistance to using double-talk and preference for plain talk (which unfortunately might also be plain wrong).  That is just part of his appeal however.

The July/August 2016 SKEPTICAL INQUIRER has an interesting opinion column deputy editor Benjamin Radford discussing how Donald Trump skillfully employs terms and attacks which appeal to various conspiracy theories and theorists.  Just recently Trump did it by attacking the press credentials of the Washington Post for his meetings.  The press whines about censorship, but it does not seem much like censorship to me.  They can print whatever they want anyway.  They just can't trespass on his meeting turf.  Trump may loss a little coverage with this ploy, but he is really making an appeal to all the conservative conspiracy theorists who think there is a sinister liberal conspiracy to load all newspapers, TV, etc with extreme liberal propaganda.  Trump gives them credibility with this attack.  It is however just the latest yanking of the conspirator chains.

Trump uses terms that flirt with the fringe and conspiracy theorists who believe Obama has conspired to stage fake or real domestic shootings in order to confiscate American guns.   He tosses out implications that Obama really wasn't born in the US despite a lot of evidence to the contrary that is all ignored by that kind of conspiracy theorists.  He gives that kind of nonsense credibility in the minds of the conspiracy theorists.

Trump also endorses the discredited, anti-science conspiracy pushing the idea that childhood vaccines cause autism.  That appeals to another conspiracy fringe.   Trump has multiple avenues to make the conspiracy fringes believe they are in the know and are not like all the "sheeple".

I have read and seen a lot of wordy-words trying first to discredit the idea that Trump could ever get the nomination and then back-filling that with more wordy-wordiness that continues to explain nothing much at all.  I think Benjamin Radford may have presented the best explanation.  Trump appeals to those who like his flirting with their conspiracy theories and since they are true believers, attacks on Trump and his flirting are all believed by them to just be part of another conspiracy which can thus be ignored.  Trump has a win-win cheap and effective strategy that is probably more clever than many realize.

That also makes him more dangerous than many realized or even now realize.

Meanwhile back in the massaging of the Orlando terrorism and tragedy, we have Hillary starting off a speech with "This is not a matter for politics". She follows that with requests for prayers or whatever.  Less than a minute or few minutes later she launches into a partisan attack on Trump.  I don't know if Hillary is just completely tone deaf, or believes we are all so stupid and ignorant we don't recognize her double-talk wordy-words.

Bill O'Reilly too often makes little sense, but his idea expressed a few nights ago on the Tonight Show that the Congress should declare war on ISIS and other Islamic terrorists might make sense.  Then our so-called home-grown terrorists intent on helping ISIS and jihad could be charged with treason, etc. LINK to more information on O'Reilly.

Meanwhile as we listen to reporters and media gasbags trying to did out more about the terrorist, we should remember that our government dug out information on the terrorists who crashed airplanes into the towers.  They utilized libraries and they haunted pizza joints.  So we had our government inspectors and intelligence wizards doing surveillance on pizza joints and forcing librarians to reveal secretly what their clients were reading.  Librarians were forbidden to tell anybody about this.  I am not sure, but my guess is that none of the pizza chasing and book chasing turned up a single terrorist.

I am obviously no expert, but my guess is the only common characteristic these terrorists have is some perverse form of radical Islam.

Speaking of Islam.  One of my farmer neighbors suggested that if we are to believe all the protestations from "moderate" Muslims of the love and peace in their religion, they better be pushing Islam to have a mass reformation that separates their religion from government and takes into formal consideration the nature of democratic government systems and the need for separation of church and state.  This is not the same world that existed 2000 years or so ago.  Women are not chattel and government has no business chopping heads of "infidels" and hands off thieves.

And, there is Obama who is all irate about being pushed to use the term "radical Islam".  His preaching in effect gives the radical Islamicists the idea that if they are correctly labeled, that gives them some kind of justification for attacking the US and all other democratic government systems.

Well, that is enough BS on this.  And no, I really don't want to hear anything from all the radical feminists who think that the real problem is actually lone wolf single white guys.   Orlando has caused some real weird birds to fly out of the political hinterlands.

I hope we can hear some real thought on these issues instead of wordy-words from political scripts which too often are intent on covering up reality instead of making it obvious to all.

***Democratic Debate and Sabbath Gasbags

I watched the Democratic "Debate" from Iowa on CBS last night.  Ended up liking Hillary less, Martin O'Malley  a bit more, and Bernie Sanders a lot more. This morning, Peggy Noonan took after Sanders with another bit showing her ignorance.  Peggy Noonan who years ago thought dolphins saved a Cuban immigrant at sea, thought Sanders relating problems in mid-east and likely increase in problems to global warming was daft and just an appeal to liberal greens.

The problem in Syria started with drought that caused rural farmers to move from new "deserts" to Syrian cities.  We might wonder if this is merely a weather event or a consequence of global warming, but it suggests that Sanders was not off base in linking Syrian problems to global warming.  Why CBS, ABC or NBC brings this cow Noonan out of the weeds is a mystery to me.  Other links related to climate change and terrorism, war, refugees, etc. Mother Jones--Sanders hits it out of the park,   National Geographic--Climate Change sparks rebellion.

The Sabbath gasbags were also hammering all Democratic candidates for not having worked out new programs to stop ISIS pigs from causing more horror and carnage.  Of course, nobody else (especially Sabbath Gasbags) has developed a whole new program in the few hours since the Paris murders and global war on western civilization by ISIS pigs.

It might seem that Democratic candidates might look at the support Trump is getting and think that perhaps building two walls across our US southern borders with a 1500 foot wide kill zone between them might put a near instantaneous stop to illegal immigration which is now an obvious threat to peace and prosperity to the US.

Expecting our immigration system to speedily and effectively control immigration or allow it from places like Syria is absurd without also committing huge sums of money and personnel to the sorting task.

But, in short, no matter the problems of Hillary and her Wall Street connections claiming no relation between huge contributions and policy right after she opposed a $15 minimum wage, the three Democratic candidates all made the Republican Clown candidates look like irrelevancy in the real world of policy and politics.

It seems to me that both of these pieces even if coming from different perspectives and world views support my idea in the previous post here.  The only way to stop attacks on media by governments and fanatical murdering terrorist pigs is to give them what they are against in spades.  The Chrlie Hebdo articles should be printed in every media outlet that claims to prize freedom of speech and press.   Freedom of speech and press is meaningless if it only applies to commercial speech or that approved by religious or government control freaks.

***Jonathon Ellis of Argus and Sales Tax.

In the Sunday, Oct5, 2014 Argus Leader, Jonathon Ellis has a column titled "Playing Chicken with state sales Tax".  He as a little fun with the idea that South Dakota is seeking ways to tax breast milk since it is a product that is unfair competition for the commercial replacements.  But, he also mentions that Sen. John Thune wants to make the sales tax exemptions of internet sales permanent and notes that will do away with South Dakota's grandfathered-in tax collection.

Thune's idea is better than the SD Revenue Departments plan to join a 30-State consortium to share sales information, buyers and sellers addresses, etc.  This would be a monstrous data collection and sharing system which could be very intrusive.

A better idea is a federal tax on all distant transactions not just internet transactions.  Collect a federal sales tax that is the average of all state sales taxes.  Let the feds keep 10% of it and refund 90% to the states based on population.   No need to keep track of who bought viagra or chastity belts or wine or whatever or where they were obtained or where they were shipped.  Taxes would be paid with individual income tax filing.

But don't expect petty bureaucrats and timid congress critters to do anything which might be both efficient and sensible.

I also note that the idea of "fairness for main street" is hogwash.  A few percent tax added to distant transactions will not help local businesses which charge two, three, or four times the going rate for products on the internet or miles away by the post office.  And mostly, my guess is that those buying stuff via the internet are only buying products that are just plain not available locally.

Anyway, the Jonathon Ellis column was readable and might make a few more people think about the issues.  I have no idea how long the link will work.

Look at the header statement above concerning foolish consistency as the hobgoblin of journalists minds.  I watched Sabbath Gasbags this morning.  Face the Nation had a spokesman of Gaza Rocketeers interviewed by Charlie Rose.  If nothing else, these promoters of their own brand of religious and ethnic insanity are skillful liars, double talkers, and prevaricators of the big lie technique.

They are for concessions by the Israelis to give them free reign to destroy Israel.  Their idea of negotion is that it is only a pursuit of grounds  for future transgressions.

You can get a perspective on their tunnel building skills.  Should they put so much emphasis on building their own economy, they might not be in such devastating poverty.

About those tunnels and their detection, etc.

We can shed tears for the killed, injured, and maimed children, but they are dying because their rabid insurgents are using them as human sheilds for their rocketeers and their rockets.  Our tears should not blind us to reality.

And just to get this into another perspective, a TownHall poll at KELO shows that something between 80% and 90% of those respondents think we should have religion and prayer in public schools.  One might think the ravages of religion and religion related generational and feudal wars and slaughter might suggest that religion is about the last thing we need our public schools.

*** Vanity, 5 Thugs, Bowe Bergdahl, and "Bob" Schieffer

This morning, ABC (KSFY) was off the air this morning so I saw none of that, but that meant I watched all of Bob Schieffer and Face the Nation.  It was a frustrating complete waste of time on pseudo issues and speculation on specultation.  Speculation comes cheap apparently.  There certainly isn't any shortage of the most useless kinds.

Schieffer was trying hard to generate some kind of controversy about Sen. Diane Feinstein not knowing about something in a national newspaper this morning.  Apparently info from Hospital in Germany suggests Bergdal was tortured by his captors and put into a metal cage for trying to escape.  Obviously no confirmation of that, but that just made a whole lot of speculation about it and why Sen. Feinstein had not been informed mostly nonsense and hot air exchange.

A whole mess of US Senators, both Democratic and Republican, have apparently had their massive egos and vanity punctured because Obama announced the trade for Bergdal at (gasp" the White House Rose Garden.  I suppose he should have done it on the capital steps with 100 Senators standing around so they could get their faces on TV and puff up their already inflated egos.  Of course then, the next day they would be complaining about President Obama invading congressional turf.

Tom Friedman was the only one of the whole bunch who made any sense.  He related this to Israel and trades there where in one case, it was 1000 Arabs for 1 Israeli soldier.  He suggested that these 5 terrorists were not giants with wings who could fly out of US high security prisons.  The attempt by the GOP to paint Obama as weak or incompetent has stretched to new highs of inanity.   Israel also found out that killing opposition leaders just meant a new leader a week later.   These 5 Taliban are interchangeable cogs in a collection of lunatic religious fanatics.  The trade indicates they are worth less than one US soldier.

I don't have a clue of Bergdahl's herorism or cowardice, but having him out of Afghanistan probably makes many operations against Taliban easier.  And time was running out anyway.  Within one year current planning indicates no US soldiers in Afghanistan.  Now, there is apparently evidence that Bergdahl walked away from a US base in the US.  The real investigation should be about which commanders decided this guy should be posted in a very remote outpost in the middle of nowhere and stuck on guard duty.  That all seems a bit like putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum.

Congressional Republicans always claim opposition to big wasteful government, but they see nothing wrong with wasting $millions on Guantanamo prison.  I guess it just fits right into their tough on crime mantra and logic be damned.

The partisan hackery and congressional vanity massaging, ego pumping chatter serves no purpose.  We don't need Congress micro-managing secret operations and negotiations.  They can't even keep their own sexual dalliance secret.  We also don't need "news" organization pandering to this nonsense.  When there is actual news that can be confirmed, report that.  Speculation on speculation about speculation is worthless.

Speaking of which, the speculation on Hillary Clinton running or not running is not news.  If she definitely announces she is running for President or not running, that will be news.  I don't know about you, but I don't give a damn about the speculation on will she or won't she.  She will or she won't and it is not news until then.

Face the Nation and Bob Schieffer spent at least a minute discussing an actual news worthy "event".  President Obama has been interviewed for an hour on global warming and climate change and the implications for geo-politics and othe catastrophe.  Tom Friedman got a few seconds in indicating the frame-changing nature of the discussion.  Also noted was a UN energy report suggesting that 2/3 of the known fossil energy reserves should be left in the ground to avert global catastrophe.

One minute on Bergdahl, the Taliban and Congressional Ego would have made more sense, with instead 50 minutes devoted to serious discussion of facts related to global warming.   Of course, Schieffer is from Texas and his brother was one of Bush's appointees, so we know where he is coming from and going.

I am often semi-pissed at Bob Shieffers's CBS bullshit, but today he filled an hour with it nearly non-stop.  It tripped a trigger.

*** US Rep. "Trey" Gowdy is an artful pinhead

The recent McLaughlin Report of Public TV had McLaughlin putting US Rep, Republican "Trey" Gowdy video up in which Gowdy asks about a dozen irrelevant questions to which he believes the US Press and people need answers.  Many years ago, when I was stirring some local politics, I figured out that asking questions was a way to phrase what otherwise might be slander or libel in a way that does not make such outright statements.  Gowdy is fully aware of the tactic as a prosecutor. Gowdy is a former prosecutor from South Carolina and he had demonstrated all the offenses to truth and justice inherent in the prosecutorial flim-flam.  He "slipped up" and actually said something much like he was "prosecuting" a crime rather than conducting a non-partisan real investigation.  A few links below on this.

There is no " There" there in the GOP Kangaroo courts and procedures.  This is the investigative version of the 30 House Republican votes against "ObamaCare". 

The terrorist attack at BenGhazy killing four US diplomats or CIA operatives is a tragedy, but nothing at all like the tragedy of thousands of US soldiers killed and/or maimed in the GOP war on Iraq all based on lies and misrepresentation of facts to generate one of the most  colossal fool's errands in history.  The GOP was also deeply involved in slashing funding for US State Department security.  Gowdy is not asking the question, "Why did the GOP vote to slash State Department funding by $300 Million?".

Thousands of US citizens are killed anually by drunken or impaired drivers.  Why isn't Gowdy asking US Secretary of Transportation, "Why do you fail to better control drunken drivers on highways?"  And why not ask AT&F, "Why do you fail to control sale of alcoholic beverages by using user licenses?"

Huffington post documents that Hillary and others have already answered the Gowdy slander in the form of questions.

While it is not probably fair, Gowdy in his photos apprears to have a tiny head.  I suspect head size is not a factor in actual intelligence, but some of Gowdy's DNA might be useful for testing such a hypothesis.

This US House show trial has too many similarities to the House Un-American Activities hearings of the McCarthy days back in the 50s.  It is a partisan slash-and- burn attack probably happening because more and more Americans are learning that the National GOP is an irrelevant bag of hot air with no real issues that should mean anything to any discerning Americans not blinded by GOP mythology and hype.  The GOP now has a full component of clowns in Washington.

The only way to prevent the US from becoming an irrelevant backwater nation is to get these bone-headed Republicans into a minority howling in the wilderness for another 40 years.   In the last 6 years or so, the National GOP has made itself irrelevant as an agent of progress and efficient, effective government.   It is nothing more than a fund-raising operation making hundreds of GOP flunkies rich from corporate  and wingnut-right mythologist contributions.
