I have posted photos several times in Dakota Today of photos of the Memorial Day Flags at the Winner Cemetery, Winner, South Dakota. Today I stuck around for the ceremony since I was told that the would mention Lowdon Heller. Heller died a few days ago as indicated in post below. The image below shows SD Lt. Governor Matt Michels delivering his speech to a crowd of a few hundred perhaps. After his speech, the names of Winner-area Veterans who had died in the last year was read. At the end of the list of 25 or 30 names, was Lowdon Heller's. He was praised as having been one of the first to push the Avenue of Flags and related events. He should be remembered every year for this colorful, patriotic event.
The Winner/Tripp County Memorial Day flags is becoming know one of the best in South Dakota. It is colorful and obviously good photo material. The flags were waving proudly today with a south-west wind of 10 or 15 mph. The scene is not nearly so colorful on one of those beautiful days with bright sun and no wind as it is on a day like this with a stiff breeze.
***Stay tuned, The weather is ready to change according to forecasters.--Doug Wiken
When I go back to Winner, I visit and sometimes decorate the graves of my folks: Aubrey & Esther Nelson, and my uncles: Henry & Celela Erickson, and Dave & Marjorie Erickson- Kulbel. Both of my mother's youngest brothers were WW2 veterans. Could you tell me if Delores Taylor(of Billy Jack movie) is still alive. Her parents are buried in Winner.
KEVEN, Thanks for comment. I don't know anything about Delores Taylor, and I talked to my wife who is from here and does hospital admissions here and she has never seen or known of Delores Taylor being back in this area. My wife thought she was deceased, but she may be alive in California for all we know.
