Republican representatives in the US House are assuming that millions of us are asleep and when we are awake support their ignorance agenda. Well, this one stubborn South Dakotan is in favor of information and education and recognizes that one of the least expensive and best tools for that is public broadcasting affiliated with NPR and PBS.
For about 15 cents per person "saving", the GOP ignorance agenda is ready to destroy public broadcasting in the United States as a more or less balanced source of information and education not beholden to corporate interests or even local businesses intent on raiding the public treasury in the name of "progress".
Some facts on the value of public broadcasting to the US are at 170 Million Americans which is an advocacy or perhaps propaganda site for public broadcasting.
The GOP in Washington apparently believes that having a public ignorant of nearly everything with the exception of their mythology and their wingnut loon right political entertainers on cable and too many editorial pages too often spewing total nonsense separated from reality and facts will be a good thing for their narrow partisan interests..
Republicans are grossly exaggertating their "mandate" if they assume millions of us prefer ignorance to information. They are also convinced that telling us there are enough other media sources that we don't really need public broadcasting will make that big lie true.
I can remember the "vast TV (and Radio) Wasteland" prior to public broadcasting. Public broadcasting is a slight sliver of light and information on our complex world. I don't care how much coverage Charlie Sheen, Lady GaGa, baseball players, basketball players, boxers, racers, recording stars who can't sing a song without slobbering the lyrics get from the media intent on providing only enough information that it gives the illusion that the rest of their trash hyping is also news of some kind important to the future of the United States.
The best way to send a message to the proponents of the GOP mythology and ignorance agenda is to contribute to public broadcasting and let our congress critters know that we are not amused by their dismissive and insulting attitude toward information by informing them by letter and phone.
I plan to do all of the above. Tonight I am writing a Check to SD Public Broadcasting whether or not I get one of those restaurant cards or they decide to censor me again.
Of all the money our state and federal governments spend, funding for public broadcasting is one of the few ways that can benefit everybody rich or poor and in the process make our country better and also more powerful. The future of the United States will not be found in GOP mythology and their ignorance agenda. The current GOP ignorance agenda has far too much in common with the both old and modern feudal attitudes toward females... keep them uneducated, barefoot and pregnant.
And if that isn't quite enough for you, take a look at Northern Valley Beacon
*** Stay tuned, but take time to write and call Senator Johnson, Senator Thune, and US Representative Kristi Noem and let them know you are not amused by GOPr desire to keep us ignorant and stuffed only with Mythology and propaganda for the rich and influential.-- Doug Wiken
Yes, but lets face it, the Republicans are afraid PBS might get to being too liberal, and just maybe "hurt" them.
