The ink is barely dry on the paper stories that Howard Dean will be visiting Rapid City, SD today and the SD GOP Party Hack Machinery grinds out a Taliban attack. In a fit of pique, the hacks demand that Rep. Stephanie Herseth condemn Howard Dean as a radical or some such. Guess I will dig out the dead tree version of the RC Journal.
Click on the image for a larger view. The larger view is not easily read however.
The gist of it however is something like this. Max Wetz, the Executive Dir. of the SD GOP demands that US Rep. Stephanie Herseth denounce Howard Dean, Democratic National Chairman visiting Rapid today August 16, 2006. Wetz in an inspired bit of lunatic prose attacks Howard Dean viciously for denigrating the Nation's war on terror and engaging in "mean-spirited and hateful" attacks on Republicans.
Wetz does go on and on demonstrating his wonderful powers of attack. He claims Dean has made wild and baseless statements and thinks South Dakotans don't like " Dean's brand of "slash-and-burn politics".
Well now isn't that just so special. A year or two ago, the SD GOP hacks went nuts when Sen. Tim Johnson referred to the "Taliban-Wing" of the GOP. I don't remember any SD GOP officials or candidates jumping up and saying, "Yes, there is a dangerous part of the GOP that mixes religon with politics and converts it into holy crusades with terrible consequences for freedom and defense of the country."
Nope, the went ballistic and Sen. Johnson in a less than courageous retreat waffled and hemmed and hedged and backed off from his fundamentally correct and appropriate labeling of that element of the Republican Party that should have been rejected by the SD Republican Party without urging by Sen. Johnson.
So, now we have the SD GOP hacks in their clown suits riding an elephant backwards jousting at imaginary windmills filled with strawmen. Not a big surprise I guess.
Meanwhile, in the real world...Howard Dean's criticism of Bush, Inc. Oil Mirage War was dead on correct. He was so correct on his assessment of the Bush War, that he scared the living crap out of the corporate media, the Washington Democratic Business Machine, and the Bush Kleptocracy.
So, in the latest GOP kill-the-messenger attack we actually see a couple of things...or at least one thing.
The vicious slash-and-burn garbage, humbug, bullshit pre-emptive attack on Howard Dean is not because Howard Dean is too left, too far to the right, or even too middle-of-the road, or too strident, or too loud, or too vigorous. NOPE, The GOP Hack Attack on Howard Dean is because he was and is fundamentally correct on his very fair criticism of the dreadfully flawed and incapable Bush Administration.
Because Bush lied, over 2000 US soldiers lives have been wasted in Iraq already. Over $300 Billion has been pissed away. $300 Billion that could probably have nearly completely converted the US home heating to wind-generated electricity or put nearly every college student in the US through 4 years of college. Beyond that, perhaps 100,000 or more Iraqis have also been killed and now the country has broken out in a civil war sending refugees from all sides of the centuries old religious wars moving to escape the religious carnage.
**Stay tuned even if you would die holding your breath waiting for the SD Democratic Chairman to take a courageous position on anything. Maybe Howard Dean can fire her up a bit---Doug Wiken
Amen, brother.
