I really like your blog. It's great to know that not everyone who lives in SD is a loon. I particularly liked your Wires1 foto, and "flat world legislature" and "rapists rights."

firedoglake sent me here -- good luck with taking your state back from these crazies. And remember, you are not alone, there are lots of people in your corner, even if they are out-of-staters....

HI,
Like your blog. I'm from SoCal. Jane Hamsher at firedoglake linked to you and quoted your post today. That's what brought me here. Sounds like you've got some real winners in state govt there. Don't worry! Hang in there. Their excesses will bring them down eventually.

Doug:

Thank you, and I will follow your comments on this threat to female sexuality. You are right, the next stop is the Dark Ages. It would be funny if it weren’t so true. Fundamentalism, whether Christian or Muslim, is a threat to all of us. All of this outcry regarding Muslim Fundamentalism in the MSM always misses what is going right here in the U.S.of A. They are Blinded by the Light on the Right!

Again thanks, and a hat tip to firedoglake for bringing you to my attention.

The comment by Tuli is dead on. Fundamentalism is eroding our civil rights one little piece at a time, each day. It's time to get RID of these radicals AND the zealot leading South Dakota, Mike Rounds. This dyed in the wool Republican state has never liked progress. I've lived here 32 of my 54 years, and if you're not related to some wealthy farmer, job prospects are dim at best. These people do NOT like forward thinking individuals. I used to be pretty quick to say what I thought when I came here, and I made enemies fast. These hicks think that, if South Dakota's been a good place to live (according to them), for the last 100 years or so, then why change anything? Unless of course, you're against higher wages, abortion on demand, smoking in ANY public place, and the like. Wake up, people! There are some like myself that would love to see this state exit FROM the dark ages. Let's not let these religious radical idiots take away what little progress that's been made in the last 30 years. When I came out here in 1974, I saw right away that this state was 25 years behind the east coast. You had to be careful who you did business with, because if you got screwed, so what? If you made a fuss about it, you were a rabble-rouser and troublemaker. I could go on, but what the hell? I know how I feel, even if others don't like it. Let's get some Democrats in office, like Daschle. Get rid of these Bush-loving Republicans and finally get a state worth living in.

John

Ken’s post reminds me of the old joke about the highway sign at the state border that reads “Welcome to South Dakota – Set your watch back 25 years.”

A review of recent election results identifies a number of progressive enclaves in the state, so it is possible to live in South Dakota without having to deal with a bunch of fundamentalist, wealthy, religious, idiotic, radical, Bush-loving Republican zealot hicks.

Voters in the following counties preferred John Kerry over George Bush in 2004, even though Bush received almost 60% of the votes statewide.

BUFFALO
CLAY
CORSON
DAY
DEWEY
ROBERTS
SHANNON
TODD
ZIEBACH

Yah, John, and you know enough about South Dakota to know where those "enclaves" are. Clay is loaded with professors and students and the rest with Native Americans (and a few very, very rich White Ranchers leasing a lot of land). The Republicans believe all Native Americans are for sale to any Democrat who stumbles along...or John Thune if he sponsors just one more pow-wow and hires a few more attorneys to do their intimidation act.

Does remind me of an article in Mother Earth magazine years ago after a US Census. Most of those counties showed up in green in their map of population growth areas ripe for investment. Never mind the annual average incomes are low and unemployment rates are high.

All this is a bit like looking at the average annual temperature...which does a good job of helping forget about the 20 below winter and the 110 degree summer days.

Of course, had Kerry bothered to have set foot in SD for even an airport speech or two and actually talked to some people here instead of speechifying in mind-numbing phrases worse than my long-winded scribbling here, he might have gotten a few more votes.
Some Daschle and Kerry strategies went very, very wrong. I wonder how Kerry feels after losing to one of the most incompetent presidents in the history of the country.

And, I am listening to old rock and roll while rant and roil is the name of the game here most of the time. Daniel O'Donnell and Mary ??? having a lot of fun with 1950 and 1960 music in another pub TV fundraiser. Right now doing their Everly Bros number...since you walked out on me..etc.

If I had any money to spare and SD Public Broadcasting could tolerate my liberal perspective on their noon radio forum, I might think about parting with a few dollars.

Speaking of TV, there is a Rapid City TV station you should buy if you want to return to South Dakota.
