We drove back from Rapid City today. Saw lots of weather off in the distance, and then hit heavy rain on the interstate. Not a real problem since it lasted only about 5 or 10 miles and all on four-lane rather than 2-lane repair stretch. Most drivers were sensible and slowed down, but a few idiots whistled past about 10 miles over the speed limit which itself was about 15 mph too fast for the actual conditions.
Back here in Winner, we heard a lot of rumbling thunder and got some rain, but nothing like the downpours we saw off in the disance as we returned. Just before sunset this evening, the sun popped out of through the clouds as a big red ball on the horizon. Cellphone shot below is of less that great quality, but gives an idea of the sun as a big red ball.
Still a lot of moisture in the air. I have never seen the whole stretch from Rapid City to Winner this green this time of year. Usually there are stretches with nothing but grass burned brown from sun without rain, but not this year--all green all the way.
Incidental note. Nothing to do with weather, but we saw an interesting device at Menard store in Rapid City. It is an automated key-cutting machine. My son tried it on a house key. Stuck it in the key slot, turned it a half-turn, and kicked in $2.00 and the machine started. Fun to watch and then clink..out came the key ..and it worked in the door lock. The machine won't cut car keys however. Maybe we are just too easily amused. I think it was a Minute Key Self-Serve Key Cutter.
