I have hardly been able to sleep at night wondering for over a year if the insurance man Rounds would jump into the race so he could help his insurance buddies destroy "ObamaCare" or whatever they imagine it actually is.
Why would anybody want somebody in the US Congress so stupid that he built a house literally inches above the Missouri River and then when it was flooded by a release of reservoir water about 1/5 of the maxiumum release volume blamed the US Corp of Engineers for his own stupidity? Also, of course, never mentioning that another ripe hypocrite, Bill Janklow sued the Corp of Engineers to keep reservoir levels high.
With global warming threatening infrastructure along our coasts, we do not need anybody in Congress ready to pour more federal money down a rathole filling with water.
Rounds is whining Republican looking for free lunch for the rich and crumbs for the rest of us. He is both a danger to the United States and South Dakota interests in the US Congress. He is a glib promoter of economic and political mythology coupled with a willingness to pander to the most backward superstitions of the Catholic Church and other fundamentalists.
To be honest, we almost never watch ABC TV or their SD affiliates. But, I had not seen green hide nor hair of the Grinch who Stole Christmas for several years and thought it might be fun again to catch some of the clever rhyming and use of langauge.
Well, it started off good..for a whole 5 minutes and then a blast of what seemed like an eternity of TV ads all pushing products aimed at converting Christmas spirit into greed and commercial salessuccess.
I am not sure what the total ad time and show time was in the half hour, but it was altogether too close to half and half. ABC did no favors to parents, children, or to Dr. Suess's memory by the full load of commercial manure dumped into the program.

I usually harp on the unfunded costs that the unnecessary beverage alcohol industry shifts to responsible drivers because of the tremendous costs to drivers and society resulting from drunken and impaired driving.
But, there is another perhaps less known cost of the irresponsible alcohol industry and the failure of our governments to sufficiently tax alcohol to cover the unnessary cost. That was highlighted on PBS NewsHour this evening November 27, 2012. Jon Cohen of SCIENCE magazine presented information on your HIV and AIDS rates. A few words from the PBS transcript below:
HARI SREENIVASAN: Is there a level or a factor of
invincibility, where the young don't feel like they are threatened by
all of the things? I mean, as you sort of slide up that ladder and go
out of the teenager and into the 18-to-25-year-olds, you see pretty low
rates as well.
JON COHEN: Well, if you look at the risk factors, it's all pretty obvious. It's alcohol.
So, we all know that, when kids start drinking, they don't control
their alcohol use. And when you don't control your alcohol use, you're
going to take risks you otherwise wouldn't take.
Elsewhere in the transcript there is information on the cost of a lifetime of medical care for young people infected with HIV and AIDS.
HARI SREENIVASAN:But one of the things that was interesting to me in this report that
said that these folks that are infected so young could cost the system
$400,000, a cost that all of us are bearing in some ways.
So, you now know another cost that the liquor industry scum dump onto all of us and another kind of miisery their product causes. The mythology that Alcohol prohibition did not work despite evidence that it did, is so pervasive in the public mind that prohibition is not a feasible alternative.
BUT, taxing alcohol sales to a level that those taxes cover the unnecessary (ie ALL) of the social, governmental, health, and economic costs of those sales is possible.
The hypocrites and alcohol industry sots and sops we have in our SD legislature and in the US Congress are looking for revenue sources. Much increased alcohol tax is the place to start. It is fair to all responsible US citizens and socially and politically appropriate.

US Senator John McCain, with help from Lindsay Graham, has been making a complete ass of himself recently even though he has the ego of an elephant's rear end. His attacks on the US UN ambassador have been ridiculous and irrelevant.
What is not usually mentioned in any of the "news" about this "issue" is that it is irrelevant whether or not Rice knew the attack was spontaneous or a planned terrorist act nearly immediately after it happened. There are no policy implications or legislative manure stirring tthat spring from the initial incorrect assessment report and the corrected version two days later.
This was and is a totally irrelevant manufactured issue. What it really indicated was and is the nearly complete irrelevance of the GOP on real issues. McCain made a huge Sabbath Gasbag issue of nothing. Attacking Rice for making a wrong statement on a Sabbath gasbag show is intereresting considering the many Sabbaths on which he himself has spouted some incredibly wrong statements.
McCain went from GOP presidential candidate to being a pimple on a gnat's ass. He is a dipstick showing the emptiness of the current GOP mythology and nonsense smoke and mirrors machine filling TV "news" with intellectual smog.
Of course, I may find new facts leading me to change my official position in the next two days, but don't hold your breath. McCain is self-made dead meat.
I have been intrigued by Magic Jack and Magic Jack Plus for sometime. First time was when I fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the night with their TV ad running. Then I saw that Radio Shack stores were selling the product. Black Friday special at local Radio Shack had it for $49 instead of $69.. Several of my friends seemed to me to be potentially good clients for a less expensive "phone system" that worked via internet connection, so I bought the Magic Jack Plus.
First off, there is little on the package that is actually fully actual information, but more like assertions as it turns out. A computer is required to set up the system even if you intend to use it only plugged into a router network. Setup is not instantaneous by any means. The device requires a large download and a minimum of 3 minutes of not touching computer keyboard, etc This process actually took something like 15 to 30 minutes. Some of the instructions on packaging internally confict and are mutually contradictory.
Then if you plan to register for an assigned number for incoming calls and continued use, you can plan on another 30 minutes online filling in forms and rejecting charges that should not be necessary were package ads actually fully truthful.
Then once I did get it working, I found out it would not work with some South Dakota telephone systems. Goldenwest, which is our local system, does not work with Magic Jack. Trying to call a local number generates a Magic Jack response something like, "Conference calls and platform calls require a prepaid charge. Contact my.magicjack....etc." Well, I was not making a conference call and have not the foggiest idea of what is a platform call. Some other phone systems in South Dakota and Magic Jack also seem to be incompatible.
It does appear to work with cellphone systems and some of the South Dakota phone system providers. I have connected with phones outside South Dakota.
Magic Jack tech service is a very slow chat system which will essentially shift you to their several pages of fine print terms of service with discussion of CLEC and ILEC, etc.
The incoming number seems to work. I have received calls from cellphones and landlines to that number.
In short, take anything promised by the Magic Jack Plus TV ads and package claims with a grain of salt. You may find it useful or not at all useful depending on your situation and the kind of phone systems you might want to call using Magic Jack.
After ripping the damnable plastic packaging to shreds and wasting about two hours getting everything set up, I will probably play with the thing till the "free" first year contract expires. Before you buy it, check some of the complaints I found after running into the Magic Jack Plus "conference, platform pay wall" message.
Well, that should give you a bunch of perspectives if you are considering purchasing Magic Jack Plus at your local Radio Shack store or from a TV ad. Despite the problems so far, it comes to something in the neighborhood of free lunch, but perhaps not nearly so free and tasty as some of the other options for phone via internet. Let me know if you have good or bad experience or even if you find this post and links useful.
I stopped at the local Radio Shack and learned from an experienced clerk there that they tell everybody about the problem with local use of the Magic Jack. Well not quite everybody, but she did suggest the real problem with the Magic Jack may actually be a problem with Golden West Telecommunications having no competition and thus may be blocking use of devices like Magic Jack. I don't know if that speculation holds water or not, but seems it might be of interest to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.
Government agencies subsidizing nearly free phone service for indigents, might also be interested in a free-enterprise option for phone service actually costing about $19.95 per year (Internet connection and computer necessary however).

This morning, November 22, 2012, CBS Morning drivel was nearly orgasmic in Thanksgiving Day chatter and thankfulness as they hyped the 57th time CBS has covered marching bands and inflated cartoon characters on a holiday.
As they were going on with their usual, "EVERYBODY" (usual nonsense exaggeration) loves Thanksgiving, etc. etc., my dear wife said, "I am thankful Obama won the electiion. The very idea of Mitt Romney as President scared me."
She kind of surprised me, I was mostly thankful that we might have some spiral cut baked ham for dinner today. A bit prosaic perhaps. On second or third thought, I decided that perhaps a lot of women (and not just in the USA) were happy Mitt was made even more irrelevant on election day. It also sent a message to the retrograde, obstructionist Republicans in Congress even if it hasn't quite sunk into their thick heads yet. Sen. Graham and McCain are making sure the GOP remanins irrelevant, but more on that in a later post.
So, whatever you are or not thankful for today, Happy Thanksgiving and may you have many more of them in future years.

All kinds of Republicans are trying to figure out why they lost the election they were absolutely certain they would win. George Will had it upside down. Obama won with the numbers Will projected for Romney. Romney himself has taken a shot at explanation and it was about as good as all the rest of his explanations.
Mitt for being such a tremendously shrewd
businessmen, flunked arithmetic. 1% of the top 1% in income no matter
how many times and places they vote, will not out-vote 47% of the
population. 30,000 is significantly less than roughly 150,000,000. First graders can probably tell you that no matter how many pieces of candy you give them to persuade otherwise.
And, the dollar arithmetic with all the billions of dollars pushed into political advertising
indicated that there are a lot of people and corporations who and
which can easily afford to pay a lot more taxes. The GOP opposition to taxes on the very, very rich is entirely expected, but also incredibly stupid and dangerous for the country.
The GOP has made itself into the GIP....Grossly Irrelevant Party.. by opposing everything in the Congress to prevent Obama from getting a second term. Romney made himself one of the most irrelevant men in America and his explanation of why he lost makes him even more irrelevant.
**** Stay tuned for military apparat-chicks... Doug Wiken
PBS on Independent Lens today ran on SDPB-TV the video "740 Park Avenue". It may be on again tonight around midnight. The Koch Brothers and other sources of lots of political money and ..thus control of politicians of both parties..have these expensive digs as their little isolated world.
Lyin' Ryan has connections to this place via his support of Ayn Rand and Randian nonsense.
If you aren't among the richest 1% of the richest 1 percent, you should find this video interesting. TEA Party knotheads should see it to understand how they have been played like fiddles by the richest economic plutocrats.
f you happen to read the bold type above, you will notice my comment on journalistic foolish consistency. This involves the attempt to provide balance to inherently unbalanced new and actual facts.
Media now is filled with new GOP heads and old GOP gas bags all trying to portray Obama's election victory as insignificant or resulting for irrelevant reasons.
This morning CBS let Huckabee ramble on in his pursuit of selling a book as he tried to make the case that the real problem with women voters going for Obama wasn't Mourdock and Akin nonsense statements on rape and women's rights, but the unwillingness of the rest of the GOP to support them with total paty solidarity. Has Charlie Rose gotten too much money and gotten so soft that he was unwilling to note that Huckabee was blathering total nonsense?
And, we have also been getting a steady barrage from Lyin' Ryan and others that voters just did not understand their big change economic nonsense. People did not stand in line for hours in rain to vote against Romney-Ryan because they did not understand. They did that because they did understand that this was just further continuation of the GOP nonsense in Congress that has made the GOP the GIP or Grossly Irrelevant Party.
The Washington GOP congress critters spent the last years following Mitch McConnell like a bunch of lemmings as they stood for irrelevance at all costs hoping against all logic to defeat Obama by being gross legislative failures themselves. South Dakota has two of these gross irrelevancies.. John Thune and Kristi Noem.
I know the South Dakota Democratic Party and too many of the Democratic candidates have all the courage of pond scum, but even so Varilek put work, money, facts, and logic into showing that Noem was irrelevant to probably 99.9 percent of South Dakotans real issues. Voting GIP in South Dakota is an old bad habit. It is the election version of shooting yourself in the foot every election.
The GIP aversion to raising tax rates is a gift to their idiocy from Grover Norquist. His pledge that most GIP morons bought into is a kind of death sentence for partisan relevancy. GOP lemmings are still planning to support this one man and his lunacy at the expense of all the rest of us. If all they do is talk compromise but hang onto retrograde obstructionism as their governing creed, the GIP/GOP should be consigned to howling in the wilderness for the next 40 years.
There is still much to be done. Voters and all citizens must wake up to the fact that the GIP Know Nothing, Do Nothing mythology-corrupted partisanship will destroy Congress and the US. Were our standards for treason not so high (and appropriate) , there would be reason for charging these mindless partisan hacks with some kind of minor treason. They have not been operating in the interests of the United States or the world as a place habitable by humans. The current Republican partisanship is an alien perspective.
Journalists trying to balance the GIP nonsense with facts and rationality are doing journalism and themselves and all the rest of us a huge dis-service.
