The standard Republican legislator joke has something to do with "don't tax me, tax the other guy behind the tree." Representative Stan Adelstein of Rapid City has a fine variation of that. Put on a special summer sales tax so all those evil tourists who dump money into South Dakota while visiting or traveling through here.
City sales tax on South Dakotans not residents of the cities is an example of rotten taxation without representation, and a state sales tax designed to additionally penalize tourists and visitors to South Dakota during the summer is peculiarly rotten and irresponsible. Much of what Adelstein does often seems to make sense, but this is an egregiously rotten basis for a sales tax. Vulture taxation is not something warranting pride or acceptance.
