The problem I see with mixing religion and government is that it gives a hammer to politicans who as they do the most egregious abusive things imaginable claim they are just doing God's will on earth. Take a look at a slightly jaundiced view of the Grand Old Rotten Party Presidential Mini-candidates as they pander to the religiously deluded.
