Listened to Midday at SDPB radio this noon. Actually called in and was then left on hold for about 25 minutes at 38 cents a cellphone minute. Interesting too was that we received an SDPB begging letter today. Testing, one, two, three....
Anyway, the discussion today June 9, 2008 was with Denise Ross on Hillary as VP, as candidate, sexism, etc. etc. Denise summed it up mostly with Truman's comment, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
If Hillary did nothing else, she might have helped pave the way for somebody like Denise Ross and her common sense to run a successful race here in South Dakota. But, more seriously, years ago, Grace Mikkelson of Rapid City, SD. ran on the Democratic ticket for congress if my memory is correct. She was very intelligent and well informed and could give a very good campaign speech. She was stomped in the election probably mostly because she was on the Democratic ticket, but also because she was a woman.
Hillary Clinton's near win at the national level and also here in SD indicates a tremendous change in attitude
or demographics depending on which columnist you believe.
Somebody called in and mentioned the idea that Hillary might make a good Supreme Court justice. Gosh, nobody had heard that idea before.....unless they read Dakota Today on May 5, 2008 and also happened to check the bloglike web site "Kiss my Big Blue Butt". Anyway, if you are curious the permalink to the post here is below:
Dakota Today May 5 ..New Job for Hillary
The main question today was something to the effect of "Should Obama select Hillary as VP." A couple callers noted her value in the US Senate might be greater and more powerful than being VP.
An article in yesterday's ARGUS noted that the Hillary Clinton campaign was on the wrong side of the "Change" issue.
Hillary was viewed by many as more of the same old same old and Obama was tuning right into the desire of many Democrats and also Republicans for getting the US back on the right track with necessary change and the urgency of now.
That is probably the primary reason to not put Hillary on as a VP. She is emblematic of yesterday and the status quo even if the Clinton yesterday was much, much better than the Bush yesterday{s}. A secondary reason for not having her on the ticket was her vote on the Bush war powers and the unconstitutional delegation of congressional war powers to a president. That decision of hers is nearly unforgivable especially if Sen. Clinton is forever unwilling to admit she screwed up.
Obscured as well in the discussion blurred by the continuing dead horse sexism talk was the age issue which Dave Kranz raised in a recent ARGUS column. Hillary appeared to do worse in areas with more youth and better in areas with more elderly white women. Incidentally, Dave Kranz never made it to the discussion today at SDPB Midday. Forgotten too apparently was that apparently Sen. Clinton and her bitter supporters are searching for any excuses to explain her defeat other than that Sen. Obama ran a better smarter and more aware campaign.
