The dead are dead. The honorifics for the dead “heroes” are designed not for the memory of the dead, but to provide a rationale for the future dead to be malleable tools in the service of some ideology or religion.
Our “leaders” don’t stand on the shoulders of the previous generations, they use the memory of their bodies piled in staircase form as a way to walk to the peaks and perks of power or maintain their power position. There is absolutely nothing more cynical than presidents and governors lauding the bravery of the canon and cannon fodder as they themselves exploit the tools and toys of power and privilege..
The politicians and preachers exploit the grief of friends and relatives hoping they will accept the waste of their loved one's lives placidly and hoping also to sucker future fodder into believing they have an obligation to die for Enron, Halliburton, Exxon, Walmart, The Post Office, The Driver License Bureaus, some religion, or some sect, or some state or nation.
I have posted photos here of Memorial Day Flags, etc. That is a ritual that stirs emotion. But, more and more I see such rituals as another building block for future tragedy, terror and tears. These rituals are not only or even mostly about honoring the past, but rather are all about preserving imperial future options and conning the gullible into believing they represent something worth dying for. It works worldwide and culture wide. It helps keeps young people going to wars and dying many believing God is on their side..no matter which side they are on. It helps get or keep their friends and relatives thinking their death searved a noble purpose.
